Song of the Day: ‘You See Big Girl’ by Hiroyuki Sawano

I have been doing an overhaul of my hard drives and in the process I’m finding many pieces of writing that have hardly seen the light of day. It almost feels the same as when one finds money in the pockets of a jacket or coat that one hasn’t worn in a long time; and though you know it’s your money, it still feels like a gift.

One such piece is a long-forgotten poem that I wrote in the heyday of 2007. That was definitely one of my favourite years of adulthood. I had just graduated college and the possibilities that life held seemed endless and the world seemed like such a wonderful place. I still believe those things however with a touch of cynicism and caution thrown into the mix: The world is cruel but also very beautiful. The battles one has to fight daily are surmountable but they chip away at one slowly; the bigger challenge is to keep those chips as minimal as possible.

Some Midnight in ___________: Over and Out!

Song of the Day: ‘A Brief Interlude’ by Andrew Bayer

Rectangular shapes, round shapes, order and law.
It all looks so simple from above.
Immense structure of complexity.
Twelve actions per square metre per minute.
Eleven thoughts per square centimetre per second.
Ten fingers per person. Continue reading

Song of the Day: ‘Dollars & Cents’ by Radiohead

Sometimes, a girl will find herself running to catch up with the world, barely stumbling and regaining balance in the process. There are those days where we ourselves are unstoppable and then there are moments of inward reflection in which we struggle just to hold together the threads of sanity. At times, at moments like these, at 1 a.m. in the solitude of the night, we find it almost difficult just to cycle the air through our lungs. And then you think of the lyrics to a song telling you to just cradle your head in your hands and breathe… So at 1 a.m. here I am trying to put these churning thoughts down. Ink on paper (rather typing words on this pixel-mesh-screen-pretending-to-be-paper). Apparently it’s supposed to help. Continue reading

Check Mate!

Song of the Day: ‘Rap wa Kan no Tamashii…datta…yona…’ by Tarantula

Conventionally, you move a pawn to spawn.
But could a knight be alright?
What happens if, intentionally, you don’t follow conventionally?

A fool you are, if carried away;
Since boldness and egomania can lead you astray.
But whom do you count among your friends?
On a battlefield, where seconds count and reality bends.

The cascade erected, the king is protected.
Refractory walls destroying my idea of victory.
Sure instinct is what’s needed now.
Some ingenuity will show me how.

But soon I must realise: I’m lacking a condiment.
The spice! that is needed to complete this experiment.
So why the hassle, why the pain?
To conquer a bastion: no venture, no gain.

So I rage on,
And try to break the castle’s gate
Until I am: check mate!
