I stumbled upon a very interesting article that brought to attention a very valid argument: ‘data’ the buzz word vs. data the actual thing. So here are my two cents on the matter.
Statisticians: Nate Silver’s recent flop highlights the fact that date analysis is hard, time consuming, and requires expert input. This suggests that hiring a staff of statisticians is not the right approach to this ‘problem’ of ‘data intensive’ journalism.
Good data driven journalism requires the time/effort/resources commensurate with long-form journalism, even if the piece is short. This calls for a different model; it needs an aggregator. (I don’t think a data journalism aggregator exists.) Someone should build it. The value added is providing the links and potentially ‘decoding’ recently released academic papers that deal with current topics in a data intensive fashion.
